What is a rainbow?
A rainbow is an arc of colour in the sky that can be seen when the sun shines through falling rain. During the lockdown we have been using the rainbow image to say a big thank you to all those keyworkers who have been helping and supporting us during this tricky time.
Making a rainbow
- Take a sheet of paper towel and cut them it into the shape of a rainbow.
- Next draw curved lines with markers/felt pens. Red, orange, Yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.
- After you have finished drawing the lines of your rainbow you can spray the lines with water from a small water bottle.
- As the water lands on the paper towel, the colours of the rainbow will begin to spread out creating a tie dye effect.

The word quiet begins with the letter sound 'qu'.
This week we are learning the letter sound 'qu'. Can you think of any times when we need to be quiet? Below is a book called 'A Quiet Night in' by Jill Murphy. Have a listen and think about a time when it has been too noisy for you. How did it make you feel? What did you do?
There is also a video clip about libraries. In our school we have a class library and we have 2 important rules. NO NOISE and NO TOYS. Watch the video and see if you can remember what activities we can do, and how we need to behave in a library.
The word queen also begins with qu.
Does the queen have a job? How does the queen travel? What does she have for breakfast? Where does the queen live?
Night time is a time for quiet. It is a time to sleep for most people and especially these zoo animals. The zoo keeper has to say 'goodnight' to the zoo animals quietly. In welsh we say 'Nos da - Good night! Listen to this story and each time the zoo keeper says "Good night" you can say it in welsh too, "Nos da"! It is good to practise your welsh phrases.
Now you have listened to the story, can you remember how the zoo keeper had to tiptoe quietly around the zoo? All of the animals tiptoed after him. The zoo animals were so quiet he didn't even hear them follow him. Each animal quiety crept into the zookeeper and his wife's bedroom. Here is a challenge for you:-
STEM Challenge: Can you build a bed that holds the most zoo animals?

Objective: Use the materials to build a bed for the most amount of animals.
Materials:
- Plastic Zoo Animals
- Craft Sticks/twigs/anything you can find
- Wooden Blocks
Listen to the book, “Goodnight Gorilla”.
Book Discussion
Ask your child to describe what they see in the pictures and what is happening.
- What are the names of the animals.
- Who is the man with the flashlight?
- What is his job? (Zookeeper - what does he do at the zoo?)
- What time of day is it, daytime or night time?
- Where are the animals going as they get out of their cages?
- Why are two pages all black with surprised eyes?
- Who takes the animals back to the zoo?
- What happens next
Using the materails you have collected, build the animal bed.
NEXT
Test your design. How many animals did your bed hold?
THINK ABOUT
Can you redesign your bed to hold even more animals? How many animals could fit on your bed?
Mathematics and numeracy always starts with a question. How much? How far? How many? What shape? Can you..?Here are two questions for you to look at:-
Another qu-question -What shapes are these foods? This sorting worksheet gives your child the opportunity to show how much they've learned about shapes in their environment |
Another qu-question we ask you in school is 'Have you written your numbers around the right way?' This video shows us a clever way to remember how to write our numbers the right way around.
Take a look and try it out! |
The Queen of Hearts she made some tarts.
Watch these two video clips to hear the nursery rhyme about the queen of hearts and to see how to make jam tarts. You can either have a go at making them with an adult or you could make some jam tarts using play dough.
We all love to get along and be friendly to one another. However, sometimes we disagree and can end up quarrelling. The word quarrel means to have an arguement or disagreement. When you quarrel with someone it doesn't make you feel very good. Watch this video clip and think about how the little boy is feeling. Can you think of something nice to say to cheer him up? What would you say to the little girl?
When we see that someone doesn't look very well, we can ask them a question - 'Beth sy'n bod? - What is wrong?
Role play - Can you set up your own doctors or hospital role-play asking your patients "Beth sy’n bod?" "What is wrong"? Use your toys, dolls or action figures as patients.
Quickly
When we move we can change how fast we go.
Can you think of 10 things you can do quickly?
This couple are dancing the quick step. It is a very fast dance. Can you dance quickly?
Question time again - Are you a friend or a stranger?
We are always talking about 'Stranger Danger' in nursery. When you click on the link below you will see photos of your class friends - these people are 'not strangers' there will also be pictures of people who are strangers.
We don't know these people so we say 'Stranger Danger'!
Have a look and see if you can guess who the friends are and who the strangers are. We do thumbs up for friends and thumbs down for stranger danger.

Once you have listened to the story and completed the activity, have a think about what you can do to Save your planet. Do you already recycle? Could you make sure the lights are turned off in a room, if your not using them? Every little thing helps!
Pets- Why do we have them?
People say having a pet is one of the best things they have ever done! But why? When you own a pet it can help you in lots of ways. Firstly they can become a great friend, they are someone to talk to, someone to enjoy exercise with, it can teach you how to care for someone else. A pet can become a very special member of you family.

4th May 2020
In our nursery class we like to use the 'Busy Feet' resource. It provides a ‘creative, active and inclusive’ approach in promoting happy, healthy, active children via simple techniques and fun activities that the children love.
In nursery we love to explore new art materials. Colour is very important to us. We learn to recognise and name the colours in english and in welsh. Please read this story 'Monsters love colours'. I hope you enjoy the monster colour mixing activity!
When I think of music and the letter sound 'm' I think of the magnificent song
'I am the music man'. This clip includes makaton. It's presented and performed by the 'Singing hands'. Please, listen, watch and then have a go at joining in.
Why not post your performance on twitter @Penyrheol2
We all need to know about money. We use it every day and children need to identify the coins as well as have a little fun with them.
You could try :- Mark Making/Writing
· The children will enjoy dipping coins into paint and rolling them across large pieces of paper.
· Provide wax crayons and tracing paper for the children to make coin rubbings.
· Encourage the children to write out their own price tags.
· Press coins into playdough to make prints.
· Splash buckets - glue a coin to the bottom of the bucket. Can the children drop other coins in and try to get one to land on the
coin?
Take a look at these two links below. They show you the coins and talk about what they are called and how much they are.

Mindfulness means paying full attention to something. It means slowing down to really notice what you're doing. Being mindful is the opposite of rushing or multitasking. When you're mindful, you're taking your time. You're focusing in a relaxed, easy way
This PowerPoint is designed to help you start your own mindfulness routine in your home. The activities are designed for young children in a way that make sense to them. Young children usually need visuals to understand a concept. This PowerPoint gives them visuals to help them practice mindfulness.
The room should be quiet and dark if possible. Ensure that children are sitting comfortably.
There are many educational websites for you to visit.
Here are two links which will support your child's letter sound recognition.

The London Marathon
On the 26th of April the 40th edition of The London Marathon was replaced by the 2.6 Challenge after it was postponed due to the #coronavirus pandemic.
Last year more than £4.5 million was raised for UK charities. As the Marathon had to be postponed, a campaign to help save the UK's charities was set up.

As most of us are working from home and the weather has been very warm and sunny, I though it might be a lovely idea for 'l' week to talk about where we live and the weather we love! Talk about your home, where it is situated, talk about Gorseinon. What do you love about living there? Ask a friend or family member 'Sut mae'r tywydd heddiw? What's the weather like today? See if you can teach them some welsh weather words.

Sometimes when we don't feel well or we feel sad we can become a little bit angry, grumpy or even bad-tempered! In welsh we say 'Dwi'n grac' (I'm feeling cross) or 'Dwi'n drist' (I'm feeling sad). This story is about a Bad-Tempered Ladybird, by Eric Carle.
If you click on the image below you can listen to the story.
If you click on the image below you can listen to the story.
After you have heard the story I would like you to think about:-
What makes you feel Bad-Tempered sometimes?
Where do you go when you feel angry or grumpy?
Is there something or someone who can cheer you up when you feel like this?
Do you have a special cuddly toy, blanket or person which you like to snuggle up to and have a chat with?
Try talking to someone in your family about what makes you Bad-Tempered like the ladybird. Ask them to help you write it down. Next think about how you would like to make your two ladybirds. You could try :-
Once you have made two ladybirds you can give them each a name beginning with the letter sound 'l'.
Now the first ladybird can ask the second ladybird in welsh 'Sut wyt ti? How are you? The second ladybird can answer in welsh too. They can take it in turns to ask each other.
Once they have answered in welsh they can continue the conversation in english by asking Why? What happened? How can I help make you feel better? To remind you of the welsh phrases please see the Tedi twt images below:-

When you log on to your Hwb account you have access to a programe called JIT5. This program enables you to create your own pictures using mark-making, stamps etc. The section of the program I want you to access is the 'Paint' button. Once you are in, you can choose a jungle background for your letter 'l' and your lion stamps.
I want you to write your letter 'l' then using the lion stamp stamp the letter 'l' over it. See below for an example.
