When we do return to school we will be focussing on reconnecting. We have been apart for quite a while now, however, many of you have been sharing your Home Learning with me via the Hwb and email, which has been wonderful!

Sharing your work with your teacher has shown me how well you are progressing in your learning and understanding.  I am very proud of you all.

When we return to class, I will be including a fun new way to self register. When you come into class you will be checking-in by writing your own name on the registration board. So over half term I want you to practise your name writing.

Below are a selection of ideas and activities for you to use to practise your name recognition and writing:-

The Challenge: To be the class with the most check-ins on Speakr each week.

Prize: Entirely up to you. Please email me with ideas for a class treat that we can have when we are back in school together.

So...please 'click' the Speakr bubble in the next post (below), EVERY DAY!

*If you have not got/lost your login details, please email me ASAP*

WE CAN DO IT, RECEPTION CLASS!

For each Reception pupil who checks in EVERY DAY FOR A WHOLE WEEK- they will be asked to add a Positive Panda Pebble to our jar when we return to school. I will keep a tally for each child.

Picture

Speakr- What is that? Many older pupils at Penyrheol have been using Speakr as a daily check-in opportunity. This opportunity is now being rolled out in Reception.

(Mrs Dindorp has your child's log in details. If she hasn't spoken to you via email, speakr or on your child's hwb account she will be phoning you to pass them onto you.)

You can also email me to find out your log in details at DindorpL@hwbcymru.net

We realise 'Blended Learning' at home is certainly different to school. Therefore, pupils checking in with their emotions is more important than ever.

Please 'Click' the bubble below to allow children to check-in their daily feelings.

The 4 friends have decided to have a pizza party. Can you make a pizza for them to share?  What toppings will they all like?  How will you share the pizza fairly and equally between the 4 of them?

Otis had a chat with the wolf and pigs and they decided on a cheese pizza because they couldn't make their minds up on what to have. The wolf wanted ham but the pigs said no way!

Step 1—Create the Pizza BasesYour pizza bases can be drawn or printed on paper, or you can create some rounds using ticker paper or cardboard. For our pizzas, Once you have traced around your shape, cut out the pizza bases using scissors

Picture
Picture
Step 2—Make Some Tomato SauceFor this step, you will need some red paper, cardstock or another material that can be easily cut and will stick. Ideas for this include felt, foam or fabric. Your sauce could also be painted or coloured onto the base.
Step 3—Create Cheese for Your PizzaThe cheese topping can be made in two ways:
  1. You can repeat step two using your choice of yellow material instead of red. If you choose this approach, don’t forget to draw the shape smaller than the tomato sauce; otherwise, the sauce will be hidden.
  2. The second method is to draw around a smaller circular object—for example, a cup—and cut out many yellow circles. Cheese could also be white like mozzarella or orange to match Double Gloucester, Red Leicester and other orange cheeses.
Picture
Picture
Step 4—Decide What Toppings Your Pizza Will have. Finally, you need to decide what type of toppings to use in your pizza craft. These can be drawn and cut out or created using stickers, foam shapes or craft materials such as sequins and buttons. Toppings could also be cut out of magazines that feature pictures of food or photocopied from books and then cut out

This week we will be introducing a new story -
The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson.

The Gruffalo tells the magical tale of a mouse who takes a walk though the woods in search of a nut. Encountering three predators who all wish to eat him — a fox, an owl and a snake — the plucky mouse has to use his wits to survive. He announces that he is meeting a monster with terrible features, a ‘gruffalo’, to scare them away. But what happens when he comes face to face with his own creation?

Click on the link below to follow the story then begin the activities.

Addition to 10 game is aimed at young children who are being introduced to the concept of addition. Children are presented with a series of addition questions in the conventional format which include plus signs. Two boxes feature the corresponding number of animals which need to be added together. After children successfully solve each calculation, the animals move to a number line below. This provides useful reinforcement of the concept of addition. The game works well on an interactive whiteboard in a whole class or group situation

The Gruffalo Game

Activity 1
Children start by moving around the area like mice so they make themselves small or simply jogging around. You can tell the story in full or tell a shortened version using the characters and places from the story so there is plenty of movement. The children perform actions to match certain characters/places within the story. For example - When the ‘Gruffalo’ is said the children should run

Example actions for the characters/places:

Gruffalo= Children run to a safe area (decided upon before the game begins) before the Gruffalo gets them.

Picture
Picture

Mouse= Children make themselves as small as possible.

Fox= the children walk around on hands and knees until the next instruction.

Picture
Picture

Owl= the children flap their arms like wings and pretend to fly.

Snake= the children lie on their belly’s on the floor and slither and move like a snake.

Picture
Picture

Deep Dark Woods= the children should stand on tip toes with arms extended and sway like a tall tree in the deep dark woods.

The other places you can make up your own actions to are the rocks, the stream and the lake or have certain areas where the children must run to when these are said.

Additional actions can be done for the description of the Gruffalo=

“He has terrible tusks and terrible claw as and terrible teeth in his terrible jaws”.

“He has knobbly knees and turned-out toes, and a poisonous wart at the end of his nose”.

“His eyes are orange, his tongue is black, and he has purple prickles all over his back”.

Should Goldilocks say she is sorry?

Sometimes we need to say sorry to someone. We might have upset or hurt someone and need to tell them and show them that we are sorry.

It can be hard to say sorry, however it is really important as it shows the other person that you have thought about your actions.

Do you think Goldilocks should say sorry?  Who does she need to say sorry to?
What did she do wrong?  How could Goldilocks say sorry?

Mrs Dindorp and her early years team plan small focused tasks during the day and then the children are given the opportunity to use the enhanced provision to follow up this work independently.

Our aim is for all our children to flourish as young learners and grow as confident individuals in a safe, secure learning environment.

We want our children to grow as individuals and recognise the contribution they can make to society.  We want our children to take increasing responsibility for their own learning, make informed choices and solve problems.

Autumn Term Learning

Picture

During the autumn term, we have a big focus on phonics.  This will help your child read, write and spell.

Learning to read… Children who read regularly or are read to regularly have the opportunity to open the doors to so many different worlds!

More importantly, reading will give your child the tools to become independent life-long learners.

Picture
We can achieve this together through:
  • Read Write Inc, a program to help your child read at school
  • Encouraging children to develop a love of books by reading to them daily, at home and at school
  • Giving children access to a wide range of books at school and at home.

Please remember that your child will need to know their Hwb Log in user name and password. If you need a little reminder then please email me, Mrs Dindorp with Hwb log in request. Many thanks for your continued support.

 Fruit and Snack Information
Each day the children will be offered milk/water, cereal, toast, rasins and a selection of fruit. They may bring in their own water bottle  from home if desired. No sugary juices please. The cost of the fresh fruit and sancks is £1 a week. This can be paid 'Half-Termly' via their Squid account.

How You Can Help Your Child at Home?

As a parent you can significantly influence your child’s learning by contributing as much as you can before they begin school and once they have started.
Parent involvement is essential if children are to flourish and reach their full potential.
Below is a list of suggested activities that would greatly help your child in the learning
process.

Picture
You can support by working at these with your child at home.

Language / Literacy / Communication Skills:
• read your child stories and poems
• talk about stories and poems
• get your child to retell stories
• get your child to make up their own stories
• make your child aware of text around them and that it has
  meaning

• make your child aware of the alphabet, sounds, names, order
• if they wish to write, please encourage your child to use the
  correct letter formation
(see Read write inc sheet) starting and
  finishing letters correctly.

• if copying underneath, ensure the correct letter formation is used
  as bad habits are
very hard to kick once a child has acquired
  them.

Please do not teach your child to print in capital letters. Capital
  letters are to be used
for initial letters only.

Mathematical Skills:
• count with your child at every convenient opportunity e.g. when
  laying the table, going
upstairs, doing up buttons
• play games involving counting
• teach your child their colours and shape names
• make them aware of numbers around them
• talk about size, length, weight etc. as part of everyday activities.

Physical Skills:
• encourage your child to dress themselves and be independent
• encourage your child to use mark-making equipment to draw
• encourage your child to use 2 or 3 fingers [thumb, index and
  middle fingers] to grip
crayons/pencils when drawing
• encourage your child to practice fine manipulative skills EG.
  Locking together jigsaw
puzzles, threading beads, building towers from construction kits, cutting out with scissors.

Outdoor Exploring and Learning

In Reception, we spend a lot of time having fun and learning outside, so it is important that the children bring in a suitable coat every day.

We ask if you can provide us with a pair of wellies that we can keep in school for the children to use when needed.

Please ensure all clothes are labelled clearly to help us locate any lost items!

"Children are not the only ones that need to learn how to be truly happy. It's all in the bucket, that invisible bucket that follows you everywhere... teaches young readers valuable lessons about giving, sharing, and caring. This guide to daily happiness, though, is not just for kids. We all need reminders of the benefits of positive thinking and positive behavior. It's an important lesson to teach and remind us all . . . that showing kindness and appreciation of others goes a long way to making this world a happier place for everyone, including ourselves
