Diolch Ddosbarth Derbyn - Thank you for all of your hard work this term!
I am so proud of all of your efforts from home - you have done an amazing job!
Have a wonderful week and remember your daily exercise and plenty of fresh air outdoors.
Find something to make you smile each day over half term.
I look forward to welcoming you back on Wednesday 24th February
The time has come for us to head back to school :)
When we do return to school we will be focussing on reconnecting. We have been apart for quite a while now, however, many of you have been sharing your Home Learning with me via the Hwb and email, which has been wonderful!
|
As of Monday, 25/1/21, we started a whole school challenge.
|
For each Reception pupil who checks in EVERY DAY FOR A WHOLE WEEK- they will be asked to add a Positive Panda Pebble to our jar when we return to school. I will keep a tally for each child. |
Speakr- What is that? Many older pupils at Penyrheol have been using Speakr as a daily check-in opportunity. This opportunity is now being rolled out in Reception.
(Mrs Dindorp has your child's log in details. If she hasn't spoken to you via email, speakr or on your child's hwb account she will be phoning you to pass them onto you.)
You can also email me to find out your log in details at DindorpL@hwbcymru.net
We realise 'Blended Learning' at home is certainly different to school. Therefore, pupils checking in with their emotions is more important than ever.
Please 'Click' the bubble below to allow children to check-in their daily feelings.
Below is an example of the easily navigable page for Reception pupils. Simply 'click' the emoji that represents your emotion. There is also an opportunity to leave a message which I will respond as soon as possible
This Spring term we will be starting a new Topic which is called....
If you go Down to the Woods Today....
During this term we will be reading and sharing stories linked to our wonderful new topic. Below is an outline on what we intend to cover.

The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson.
The Gruffalo tells the magical tale of a mouse who takes a walk though the woods in search of a nut. Encountering three predators who all wish to eat him — a fox, an owl and a snake — the plucky mouse has to use his wits to survive. He announces that he is meeting a monster with terrible features, a ‘gruffalo’, to scare them away. But what happens when he comes face to face with his own creation?
Click on the link below to follow the story then begin the activities.
Activity 1
After listening to the story can you have a good think about which part was your favourite? I want you to draw a picture and say why it was your favourite part of the story. Activity 2
As the little mouse travelled through the woods he met different animals. Can you remember the order in which he met them? I want you to draw the animals onto this map. You can then use the map to retell the story in the correct order. |
All of the animals in the Gruffalo story are all very different. Have a think, how are we different from our friends. Click on the link below to read through the 'We are all Different' book. Then complete the activities.

Welsh Challenge - Describe how the animals are feeling using welsh phrases.
|
Let's see how good you are at listening and following instructions. Here we have a description of the Gruffalo. Ask an adult to read out the description and I want you to have a go at:-
1- drawing your own Gruffalo
2- use playdough, salt dough or clay to make a 3D sculpture of
the Gruffalo.
The Gruffalo Game
Activity 1
Children start by moving around the area like mice so they make themselves small or simply jogging around. You can tell the story in full or tell a shortened version using the characters and places from the story so there is plenty of movement. The children perform actions to match certain characters/places within the story. For example - When the ‘Gruffalo’ is said the children should run
The other places you can make up your own actions to are the rocks, the stream and the lake or have certain areas where the children must run to when these are said.
Additional actions can be done for the description of the Gruffalo=
“He has terrible tusks and terrible claw as and terrible teeth in his terrible jaws”.
“He has knobbly knees and turned-out toes, and a poisonous wart at the end of his nose”.
“His eyes are orange, his tongue is black, and he has purple prickles all over his back”.
Activity 2
Julia Donaldson and her husband Malcolm, and a special guest perform 'The Gruffalo Song' with Makaton signs. Watch this You Tube clip and have a go at signing along using Makaton.
I hope you enjoy your activities this week. As always I am eargly awaiting your emails and uploads. Don't forget to share your work with your teacher as it is very important that she sees how hard you are working. I wish you all a safe and happy week. Take care from Mrs Dindorp

Should Goldilocks say she is sorry?
Sometimes we need to say sorry to someone. We might have upset or hurt someone and need to tell them and show them that we are sorry.
It can be hard to say sorry, however it is really important as it shows the other person that you have thought about your actions. Do you think Goldilocks should say sorry? Who does she need to say sorry to? What did she do wrong? How could Goldilocks say sorry? To help you think...... ...here are some flashcards that show you how you could say sorry. |
Activity 1 - Can you pick which idea you think works the best and use it to show Goldilocks how she could say sorry.
This is a lovely way to say we are sorry. Sadly with the Corona virus about, we must keep 2 metres distance to stay safe. We could try these other suggestions for now. |
Other suggestions:-
You could make an I'm sorry card for Baby Bear, Make him something like a bracelet or something he could keep. Maybe write a letter from Goldilocks saying she's sorry or even draw a beautiful picture for Baby Bear from Goldilocks.
This interactive colouring activity is ideal for reception children learning about Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Children can colour in a variety of images from the three bears, to the porridge bowls to Goldilocks herself.

We want our children to grow as individuals and recognise the contribution they can make to society. We want our children to take increasing responsibility for their own learning, make informed choices and solve problems.
During the autumn term, we have a big focus on phonics. This will help your child read, write and spell.
We can achieve this together through:
- Read Write Inc, a program to help your child read at school
- Encouraging children to develop a love of books by reading to them daily, at home and at school
- Giving children access to a wide range of books at school and at home.
Please remember that your child will need to know their Hwb Log in user name and password. If you need a little reminder then please email me, Mrs Dindorp with Hwb log in request. Many thanks for your continued support.

How You Can Help Your Child at Home?
As a parent you can significantly influence your child’s learning by contributing as much as you can before they begin school and once they have started.
Parent involvement is essential if children are to flourish and reach their full potential. Below is a list of suggested activities that would greatly help your child in the learning process. |
You can support by working at these with your child at home.
Language / Literacy / Communication Skills:
• read your child stories and poems
• talk about stories and poems
• get your child to retell stories
• get your child to make up their own stories
• make your child aware of text around them and that it has
meaning
• make your child aware of the alphabet, sounds, names, order
• if they wish to write, please encourage your child to use the
correct letter formation (see Read write inc sheet) starting and
finishing letters correctly.
• if copying underneath, ensure the correct letter formation is used
as bad habits are very hard to kick once a child has acquired
them.
Please do not teach your child to print in capital letters. Capital
letters are to be used for initial letters only.
Mathematical Skills:
• count with your child at every convenient opportunity e.g. when
laying the table, going upstairs, doing up buttons
• play games involving counting
• teach your child their colours and shape names
• make them aware of numbers around them
• talk about size, length, weight etc. as part of everyday activities.
Physical Skills:
• encourage your child to dress themselves and be independent
• encourage your child to use mark-making equipment to draw
• encourage your child to use 2 or 3 fingers [thumb, index and
middle fingers] to grip crayons/pencils when drawing
• encourage your child to practice fine manipulative skills EG.
Locking together jigsaw puzzles, threading beads, building towers from construction kits, cutting out with scissors.

Outdoor Exploring and Learning
In Reception, we spend a lot of time having fun and learning outside, so it is important that the children bring in a suitable coat every day.

Our Topic for this Autumn Term was 'Happiness'
We have been sharing a selection of amazing story books based around Happiness, sharing, patients, understanding ourselves and others, feeling loved and talking about emotions using both english and welsh languages.
