Home Learning Week Beginning February 1st Chwefror 1

Good morning everyone, hope you are all ok. There is a lovely selection of learning activities below to keep your school work on track. Take some time to look through them and plan your week of home learning. There is a science investigation which requires a bit of construction. I would suggest gathering your resources together and having a science day - I think you will enjoy it!

From this point onwards, I would like you to upload your home learning to J2E. To help you do this I have made a few tutorial videos which I have posted above. If you have any problems please email me and I will do my best to help. Uploading your work to J2E will keep it all in one central place and Mrs Lecrass and I will both be able to comment on it.

The focus for maths this week is measuring mass. To start this topic, I would suggest getting out the kitchen scales and practise estimating and measuring a range of objects around the home. Now that you have mastered the 7 times tables, it's time to start the 8 times tables. Remember this includes division too!

Maths - Measuring

Measuring Length

Gather together some instruments for measuring such as ruler, DIY tape measure and a sewing tape measure. Look at and discuss these objects together to find out what your child already knows about measuring length. Highlight the different units on each side but explain to your child that in school we learn about the Metric system which includes mm, cm, m and km.

You can use the following videos and activities to introduce the topic of measuring. Practical experience is always best so give your child lot's of opportunities to measure the length of objects around the home and to record their findings using the correct units. .
Picture

Picture
Below is a set of worksheets covering the topic of measuring. They can be completed in the order you see below. Please do not feel you have to complete them all, do what you feel is appropriate for your child.

I would love you to show me what you know about our Solar system, You can choose how you want to present this. One option could be to make a Powerpoint using Present in J2E. I've started one off as an example, just click the link on the left. Or, you could create an infographic poster. This is a great option if you prefer to design using paper/colouring pencils. An example of an infographic poster is shown below in the middle. Whichever option you choose, please make sure your work contains interesting facts, full sentences with capital letters and full stops in the correct places and exciting pictures to grab the readers attention! If you choose a digital option, please share your work with me. If you make a poster, send me a picture of it but please keep the original work safe to bring into school. You could also make a poster on J2E 5.

The Space Race

For many years, the USA and USSR were in a race to conquer space. In 1957, Russia sent Sputnik, the first artificial satellite, into space. President Kennedy responded by promising to send an American to the Moon. Eventually the two nations decided to end the Cold War and work together and, in 1981, the space shuttle Columbia was launched.

Design your own Mission Patch

Patches usually have a picture related to the mission or the spacecraft they are flying on, and they often have the crew's names on them too. The Apollo 11 patch shown above is from the first mission to the moon - the lunar module spacecraft that landed on the moon was named Eagle. See lots more patches by clicking here.

Imagine you are about to board a mission to Mars. Try designing your own Mission Patch. You could print and use one of the templates below or choose your own shape. Amser Cymraeg - Welsh Old New Year Traditions - Yr Hen Galan

Picture

Blwyddyn Newydd Dda! This week we are learning about some old Welsh traditions. In some parts of Wales they celebrate New Year on January 13th Yr Hen Galan. Children would knock on the door of their friends and family and sing a song. ( we definitely can't do this at the moment!). They would then be given some money as a present! Children would also carry a decorated apple called a 'perllan'.
Picture
Can you draw and label your perllan using Welsh. We have written lots of instructions in Welsh using bossy commands. Can you have a go at  writing some instructions using the pictures below to help you?
