Today we are going to learn about how authors create characters. Watch the video below to find out more.

INSPIRATION:
In the video, Zanib talks about how she takes inspiration from friends, family members and even strangers for her characters. She takes the quirky traits that she sees and exaggerates them for her stories.
Challenge:
Spend a few days observing the important people around you. What sorts of interesting quirks can you see? Are there any weird and wonderful habits that you find interesting? Make a note of them!
Develop:
Think about how you can use your notes to create a new character (or several new characters). What traits can you exaggerate for comic effect? Create a ‘photo album’ or scrapbook of your new characters. Make annotations or labels to show the quirky traits that you have given your characters.

Creating your own characters
Using the new characters that you have created in your photo album or scrapbook, create various thought monologues for them as they do mundane, daily tasks. For example, what would your characters think when they’re brushing their teeth, or eating breakfast, or walking to school?
CREATIVE CHALLENGE FROM ZANIB MIAN! When you’re writing, you don’t always need to tell the reader what your character is like; you can show it through their actions. Pick a character trait and think about how you can show it in their actions – you might show they’re FUNNY by making them tell jokes!
