WE CAN DO IT, YEAR ONE!
Speakr- What is that?
Many older pupils at Penyrheol have been using Speakr as a daily check-in opportunity. This opportunity is now being rolled out in Year 1.
We realise 'Blended Learning' at home is certainly different to school. Therefore, pupils checking in with their emotions is more important than ever.
Please 'Click' the bubble below to allow children to check-in their daily feelings.

Song Of The Week: 'Never Gonna Give You Up' by Rick Astley
Our song of the week, this week, is an upbeat classic that I am certain your family will know.
There are plenty of positive messages that link with our Lent learning. Can you identify the good deeds and things the singer says he will never do, as you listen? Can you learn the chorus? We could perform together when we return to school. I hope you have fun singing and dancing to this one, Year 1. Video footage would be brilliant to share with your friends. Pob lwc! (WC: 8/2/21) |
|
LENT (Online Learning WC: 8/2/21)
Over the half term break the religious period of Lent shall begin.
Therefore, during our final week of this half term, we shall learn more about this Christian calendar event. If we were in school Mrs Williams would definitely have discussed this with you in assembly. So, why not become a teacher and share your knowledge and experiences of Lent with Mrs Williams, when we are able to return to school? Where To Start? There is a lot of information and it is not only about PANCAKES! Fear not, some pancake fun shall be included! Before thinking about the activities below, please look at the linked PowerPoints and the BBC website with a grown up. |
Activities:
Language, Literacy and Communication-
a) Prayer Writing: Can you write a prayer of your very own for this special time of year? Try to use some information you have learned about Jesus and his experience in the desert. Also consider what you want to say to Jesus regarding what he did. Does that make you want to do something too? If so, include it in your prayer. *You do not have to use the template. You may choose to type on JIT/ complete on paper/ in a pad. We could even learn your prayer when back together in class! Extension: If you wish to record yourself reading your prayer, please do send me a video clip. |
b) Acrostic Poem Writing:
Can you write an acrostic poem about Lent? Again, this activity needs information you have learned but is a message for ALL not just God, like the prayer. Each line MUST have a word that starts the letter on it! Quite a challenge- but I think you can do it! For example the 'L' line may start with the word 'Love'. Pob lwc. |
Mathematics and Numeracy-
Tally and Bar Charts: Question: What is your favourite pancake topping? Can you survey your friends and family and present your findings in a tally and a bar chart? (This is a great excuse to phone/ video call lots of people while doing your maths work) To refresh your memory, please try the activities 1, 2 and 3 before your final survey. Can you remember the golden rule with a tally? (I will give you a clue: It is to do with number 5). P.S. You can put one tally mark down for 'Lemon' for Mr Jenkins as a starter! Linked MY MATHS challenges have been allocated too. |
Science and Design Technology-
a) Experiment: Lemon is a popular pancake topping and my favourite! Many of you enjoyed our last experiment with the floating eggs, so here is a new one with the pancake favourite. Can you create a lemon volcano? Follow the instructions for some awe and wonder. Please do take pictures. It would be lovely to share these with each other. |
Humanities-
Word Cloud- You will hear lots of new words this week while learning about Lent. Can you write these words in a word cloud (leaf shaped)? What am I looking for: Words that relate to the story or are very important. Use of different colours. Writing in different sizes and directions (Most important words written the largest). Please see the 'church' example pictured. |
b) Crosses:
Lent is a time when we prepare for Easter. Can you prepare by making a cross? This is an open ended activity. You can make your cross using whatever you would like. There are some ideas you may be inspired by in the gallery. Please 'click' to enlarge. |

Friday 5th February is Welsh Music Day. To celebrate this national calendar event we have a week of activities linked to Wales and 'Welshness'. The inspiration behind our activities will come from a Glynneath legend, Mr Max Boyce M.B.E. Please listen to his song 'Swansea Town' before attempting activities. You will be redirected to YouTube by clicking the button below. Please practise singing this as our 'Song of the Week' too. Mr Jenkins would love to see videos of you practising and performing as usual. |

Activities: Language, Literacy and Communication: Capital Letters- Last week, we started considering capital letters and when to use them. This week, I would like you to extend this by correcting errors and ensuring each local Swansea place name is written perfectly. Extension for additional merits: Can you order the Swansea place names in alphabetical order? You could even add additional places to enhance your Swansea alphabet. There are no names for some of the letters. |
Persuasive Leaflet-
Mr Boyce sings of Swansea being a "lovely sea town". Can you create a leaflet to persuade people to come to Swansea? (After the pandemic has ended obviously) You can use the template provided or create one of your very own. Please use the leaflet support document to help you create a fantastic piece of work. To help you think about why Swansea is so great, consider what wonderful places we have around us. If you need reminding, check out the 'Visit Swansea' website and explore with a grown up. https://www.visitswanseabay.com/ NOTE: This leaflet could be about any part of Swansea (rural, the bay, centre or the Gower) Song Innovation- Can you innovate the song 'Swansea Town'? This is your opportunity to be a songwriter. You can change the lyric to make the song more personal to you and your knowledge of Swansea. Include details you know and experiences you have had. Try to use your own spelling wherever you can. It does not have to be correct, but decode able by sounds. I cannot wait to read your song lyrics! |
Mathematic and Numeracy:
Money- Mr Boyce sings about a "fortune" taking him away from Swansea. Discuss what a fortune is. Therefore, this week we shall explore money. The first thing we need to know is the value of each coin. Secondly, you can impress Mr Jenkins with your ability to add amounts together using the pence sign (p) Lastly, can you work out what change you would be given if you had 10p to spend. I encourage you to explore real money before attempting these sheets which can also be replicated on plain paper. |
REMINDER:
My Maths challenges shall also be set. |
Humanities:
Mapping- Max Boyce sings of the beauty of the Swansea sea side. I am sure your local area is equally as beautiful. Can you draw a map of your local area? To refresh your map skills memory, see the linked PowerPoint. 'Google Maps' is the best place to start. Locate your home and work from there. To make it the most accurate as you can, try to include the correct shape roads, areas of land and size of buildings. Extension: To make your map extra grown up, add map symbols as seen on 'Google Maps' document linked. (You could draw these or cut and stick onto your map drawing). You could also include road names where appropriate. |
Expressive Arts: Poster- Can you create a beautiful poster to entice others to come to the Swansea coast? Your poster should be inspired by a specific location in Swansea. This can be anywhere you choose. Look at the examples included to inspire you. You should try to make your poster bold, bright and eye catching. It should have a location title and a short, simple phrase to make people want to visit. Visualising- Can you visualise what the song lyrics are about as you listen? There is a story within the song that I am certain you could draw beautifully. Remember to use all the space available and include as much detail as you possibly can. Comparison- 'Swansea Town' has been recorded by another Welsh entertainer, Sir Harry Secombe. Can you listen to both versions and compare the recordings? You will need to listen very carefully as both recording are old and live. Elements to consider: Pitch: high/low Tempo: slow/fast Dynamics: loud/ quiet Texture: thick / thin (lots vs. few instruments) Record your thinking in the table provided (or copy this onto plain paper/ a pad). |
Health and Wellbeing:
Ball Skills- Max Boyce is very well known for singing songs about sport and Swansea is most certainly known for its wonderful football team. Can you enhance your ball skills to keep yourself fit and healthy? Watch the video to see demonstrations then have-a-go. Start with the one hand throw- two hand catch. Then, the one and throw- one hand catch. Later, one hand to other hand throw and catch. Lastly, throw, clap, catch. Extension for additional merits: Can you keep your scores each day of the week using a tally ? |
Please do send videos of your varied practises.
I look forward to watching you up skill yourselves. |
Look who has been trying to save the sea, from Danny McGee!

Song of the Week: 'What a Wonderful World' by Louis Armstrong
Firstly, well done to all who practised last weeks song.
For those who were a little camera shy, we shall sing these songs when we are able, back at school. This week, we have a new song for you to practise. It is a beautiful positive song with lots of hope. Mr Jenkins certainly hopes to see you "shaking hands" safely in the future. Good luck. I look forward to your videos. (WC: 25/1/21) |
|
'Danny McGee Drinks The Sea' by Andy Stanton (Online Learning WC 25/1/21)
This week, we shall explore a silly story that I hope will make you chuckle.
Meet Danny McGee, a young boy who is either very ambitious or very foolish. You decide! I hope you enjoy this humorous story with lots of rhyming words to identify. I am certain you are now experts at this. I look forward to seeing your efforts and rewarding you with merits. Pob Lwc! |
Activities:
1. Language, Literacy and Communication- a) Capital Letters- Danny swallows the alphabet ABC. Can you complete these capital letter activities? First, match lowercase to capitals and then recall by adding the correct one to each lowercase. If you are confident, you can try using capital letters correctly in a sentence. Use the mat to help you. b) Persuasive Letter- Last week, we looked at letter writing to a loved one you miss. This week, can you write a letter to Danny and provide him with reasons why he MUST not drink the sea? Do try to remember to include all the features of a letter: Your address, date, a welcome phrase, explain why you are writing and a parting phrase. You may wish to refresh your memory by looking at last weeks PowerPoint again. You may use the template too, if you so wish. c) A Swee? What is that? The author, Andy Stanton, makes up an animal called a 'Swee', that Danny eats. Can you create and label a new animal that Danny would definitively NOT want to eat? Think about all the different body parts that might make Danny rethink about eating your animal. You can use the parts of various other animals to create your very own new beast. Be as inventive as you can. Please describe the body parts when labelling too (EG. 8 long spider legs) |
Amser Cymraeg Ar lan y Mor- What would you need to take to the beach? What would you wear? Can you learn the Welsh words? Listen to the Powerpoint and have a go! Click on the bag for a recording sheet. Pob lwc blant!
2. Mathematics and Numeracy-
Measure- Length Danny used a straw longer than Frannie to drink the sea. Can you use straws to measure things around your home? (Non standard units) Estimate how many straws long you think an object will be, then check by measuring. You can use the record sheet provided or use your own paper. Photograph of you measuring would be great. *Note: If you do not have straws, you could use other things such as spoons, pencils etc. as longs as they are all equal in length. CHALLENGE: (Standard Units) If you enjoy that, why not go a step further and try cutting and measuring straws by the centimetre, using a ruler? See the picture provided Instructions: Ask a grown up to tell you how many CMS they want the straw to be. Write that down (include the measure: cms). Use a ruler to measure, then cut and stick a straw of that size by your measurement on a sheet. Repeat for different lengths. |
Remember:
MY MATHS challenges shall also be set for the week too. Keep up the fantastic effort! |
3. Science-
Salt Water Experiment- Can you explore the difference between fresh water and salty water (just like the sea)? Equipment: 3 glasses, eggs, salt, spoon. Instructions: 1. Predict on the record sheet, what will happen to the egg in the 3 different types of water 2. Fill 2 glasses 3/4 full with water. Add salt to one glass. 3. Place an egg in each glass. Observe. 4. Draw and write what happened in each glass. 5. In the final glass, add half the fresh water and half the salt water. Add the egg. what happens? 6. Draw and write what happens in the 3rd glass. 7. Explain why this happened after watching the explanation video. |
4. Humanities-
America KWL grid: During the story Danny swallows the whole of America. Can you complete a KWL grid about America? Instructions: K= Know- Write down anything and everything you already know about America. (This must be before researching!) W= What do you want to know? Here you write down any questions you have about America. L= After researching, write down the new things you have learned. *Note: Your research could be talking to somebody who has been to America, exploring the PowerPoint with a grown up, looking in books/ online or learning with 'The Go Jetters'. |
5. Expressive Arts-
Beach landscape inspired by local artist, Hannah Davies- Can you create a seaside landscape in Hannah's style? Hannah's work is always in pastel colours. She uses lots of patterns too. Look at the examples to inspire you. Start by drawing the the key features. Then, include detail inside these, such as patterns, leaves, florals and animals. You can use any materials. Hannah often uses watercolours but you do not have to do the same. Colouring pencils would work well. Remember you can shade on top of colours if you press lightly. |
6. Design Technology-
New Drink Recipe- WE MUST STOP DANNY MCGEE! He cannot drink the sea. Can you make him a drink that is more delicious than salty sea water? This is a chance for you to be creative in the kitchen. What ingredients do you think will tempt him? Will it be a milkshake, mocktail or a smoothie? Things I am looking for: Film yourself making your drink like a TV chef/ take photographs of the process (and possibly make a pic collage). Finally, write out your recipe for others to try. *You may wish to use the template provided, your own paper or type on JIT. |
7. Health and Wellbeing-
Try Something New- Danny tries eating and drinking so many things. However, he eats things he really should not. Can you try eating something new that you should eat to be healthy? This could be something you think you do not like but have not actually tired. What I am looking for: I would like you to draw a picture of what you have tried and then describe it with 5 words. Use your senses: Think about what it looks, feels, smells, tastes like. (Mr Jenkins' Bushtucker Trial: I am sure you all know something Mr Jenkins thinks he does not like to eat. If at least 5 of you try eating something new then I shall try my least favourite food, one more time). |

Song of the Week: 'You Are My Sunshine' by Christina Perri
Music is a key part of our time in class in Year 1. Our class is filled with the sounds of a young choir, daily
While working at home I challenge you to learn a new song, each week. This week, it is a simple traditional lullaby that many parents and grandparents will have sung before. However, now it is your turn to try singing it, Year 1. Please have-a-go and do send me clips of you practising and performing. Lets see who has... THE VOICE! (WC: 18/1/21)

'Grandad's Island' by Benji Davies (Online Learning WC: 18/1/21)
This week, we have a very different type of story, Year 1. There is not a rhyme in sight! 'Grandad's Island' is about a relationship between a young boy, 'Syd', and his beloved Granddad. This story encourages us to think a little deeper. We need to consider what the author is REALLY trying to tell us. There are hidden messages to make us connect with our feelings and emotions. I hope you enjoy this story by one of Mr Jenkins' favourite current authors. |
Activities:
1. Language, Literacy and Communication: a) Desert Island Preparation Grandad and Syd set off on an expedition to a far away island. If you were to travel to a distant island what would you take with you? Consider your needs and comforts. Draw suitcase and within this draw and label the 6 items you would pack. ONLY 6! Extension- Under your picture please include sentences to reason why you have chosen each item. Remember to use the word 'Because' |
b) Letter Writing
At the end of the story Syd receives at letter from Granddad who is no longer around. Can you write a letter so somebody who you miss seeing at the moment? Try spelling words on your own, as much as possible. Most importantly, remember those all important finger spaces and full stops. This is a great opportunity to learn how to write your address, cheer somebody up and visit the post-box on a daily walk. (Note to grown ups: Encourage children to sound out the words. It does not matter if it is misspelt, if it is phonetically plausible). 'Click' the buttons for support materials. |
c) Ideal Island The author and illustrator, Benji Davies, shows us a beautiful tropical island which Syd and Granddad explore together with much joy. Can you create and island of your very own? What would you want on your island? It need not be tropical. It could be in the arctic. Anywhere. In any weather condition. Draw and name your island. Draw and label all its features. You can even include a picture of you doing something exciting and perhaps some of the creatures who live there too. Pob Lwc! |
2. Mathematics and Numeracy:
Positions and Directions- To get to the island the ship had to move in many directions. Can you move in different directions? First, ask a grown up to give you direction around the house/ garden. Can you follow them correctly? Challenge: Can you make a maze out of sticks (or other materials)? Then follow directions while blindfolded? Then give another person directions to complete the maze. I would really like to see videos of the fun you have attempting this. Syd's Granddad may not be able to help you but... ...HIP HOP GRANNY CAN! 'Click' the link below to get active and join in! https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/supermovers/ks1-maths-position-&-direction/zhh9scw |
Have a go at the game below to really test yourself, particularly on your left and right.
Online Game: 'Click' the link below to use your direction language (Forwards, backwards, left and right) while positioning 3D shapes. 'Select' 3D Space game to play.
https://www.starfall.com/h/geometry/?mg=m |
3. Humanities:
a) Charles Darwin- Syd's Granddad has an attic full of wonders from around the world. He was an explorer. One of the most famous explorers EVER was a man called Charles Darwin. Can you find out about this very interesting man? You could reserach online with a grown up and/ or look at the PowerPoint button here. Complete a fact file about this fascinating man. You may wish to use the template provided or be creative and make your own. |
4. Science/ Design Technology:
Shelters- If you were trapped on the island you would need a safe shelter. Can you build a shelter just like Syd and Granddad? It must be suitable for the island of your choice. So consider your materials carefully! This can be a craft project, an outdoor opportunity or more of an experiment. It is open ended. Be as creative as you like! I look forward to seeing your photographs. |
5. Expressive Arts:
Henri Rousseau- Toucan We have studied one famous artist in Y1: Pablo Picasso. Lets now look at Henri Rousseau. He painted many exotic wonders in the natural world. Similarly, the illustrations in 'Grandad's Island' show many jungle animals (and plants). Could you name them all? Well one beautiful bird in the story is the Toucan. Can you draw a Toucan just like Rousseau? After following the instructions. Outline your drawing with a dark pen. Then finalise by drawing additional trees, leaves, flower and plants around the frame of the picture. |
6. Health and Wellbeing:
At the end of the story Syd is all alone. Why? What has happened? What is the author NOT saying? (Discuss with a grown up)
Many people are alone right now. Some may be feeling lonely. Can you think of something to brighten up their day? You may wish to do something or make something. Some ideas if you are stuck: Phone/ video call, perform a song/ dance, make a card or picture.
SPREAD YOUR HAPPINESS!

Go Outdoors Challenge- WC 18/1/21 (Symmetry)
|
Last week, many of you enjoyed the symmetry activities, both online and on paper. Well, this week I would like you to transfer your maths to the outdoors.
Watch the video by Dawn from Nature Days, a recent visitor to our school. I then suggest you collect and group or photograph the things you find (you may wish to make a Pic collage) . Alternatively, you could have 2 sheets of paper and draw and label natural and man made things you find that are symmetrical. Once you have found symmetrical items and considered the video challenges, there are additional outdoor activity cards and/or a record sheet attached. Get creative and do send me photographs of your work! Pob Lwc! |

'The Cat In The Hat' by Dr. Seuss (Online Learning WC: 11-1-21)
Our first story of 2021!
During the Autumn term, we had a fabulous time exploring many Dr. Seuss books. There was one book many of you were very keen to delve into but unfortunately we ran out of time. Therefore, I hope you FINALLY enjoy the story of 'The Cat In The Hat' and the linked activities. I look forward to seeing the results of your activities. Dr. Seuss uses many words that we can read in Year 1. Below you will find a copy of the story for you to read with a grown up. Remember to blend your sounds to read our green words and try to recall your red words from Read Write Inc! Alternatively, you can watch the story being read to you in the YouTube clip below.
|
*While reading it is a good idea to make a list of new words you are unsure of to practise throughout the week. After practising, I am certain if you re-read 'The Cat In The Hat' you will know these words.
Activities:
Activities:
1a. Language, Literacy and Communication: Rhyming- We have completed many rhyming games in Year 1. So, I am certain you will be wonderful rhyming at home. Can you complete a rhyme hat for cat? NO! A rhyme hat for you! You may choose a word from the story and then write as many words that rhyme with this as possible. Try to include real words as much as possible! Challenge Time: Who will have the tallest hat with the most rhyming words? I look forward to seeing you wear your hat and "rhyme thinking". Pob Lwc! (Additionally, you may wish to record you saying your string of rhyming words, like we do in class. How many words can you say without stumbling? Let make each other laugh!) |

Refresh your symmetry skills with these familiar Topmarks games: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/symmetry/symmetry-matching https://www.topmarks.co.uk/symmetry/symmetry-sorting You may wish to use the sheet provided. If not a grown up could draw half for you to complete the mirror image. You could always use objects to make a symmetrical cat face (I.E, leaves, sticks, pots and pans, stationary etc.) Remember to work out from the 'magic line'. But most of all, your picture must be identical on both sides. (NOTE: My Maths challenges are also set for for week commencing 11/1/21) |
4.Design and Technology:
Design and make a kite- The Things One and Two liked to fly kites. Can you make a kite to fly just like them? BUT...not in the house! We would delight in seeing videos of you flying your successful kites too! |

Here is your opportunity to make your very own cartoon drawing, much like the Grinch we created before Christmas. You can impress your family with your drawing and mature colouring during this activity. Remember to press lightly with your pencil until you outline. Shade lightly in one direction too as this always looks more impressive and professional. |
6. Treat time!
After all that hard work, I am certain you (and mums and dads) deserve a treat. How about making a snack and settling down to watch the film version of 'The Cat In The Hat'? Can you help with the preparation, cutting and assembling? The film is currently available on NETFLIX. Note to parents: PG rating |
New Year... New Challenges. Lets begin! (January 6th Onwards)
2. 2021 Happiness Jar- Can you review your week, throughout 2021? Think about something good that has made you smile, laugh or feel good. Write this down and add it your 2021 Happiness jar. P.S. Personalising your jar with decorations is a good start. Finding a special place for the jar is key too. Keep a special pen and different paper near it, to remind you to write. Try to include the date on these notes too. You are certain to have a happy New Years Eve in 2021 when reading these. |
3. Cultural Comparison-
Can you find out a new fact about New Year traditions from around the world? 'Click' the button to find an interesting factual video. You may wish to make a list of similarities and differences between UK celebrations and those around the world. Maybe you want to write about and draw one fact to add to our class calendar. Alternatively, watching the video may make you ask questions. You can write these down for us to consider in class together or research this with a grown up. |
